Technology Spotlight - CDAlkySM Process

The patented CDAlky process is an advanced, low temperature sulfuric acid-catalyzed alkylation process for the production of superior quality gasoline blending stock.

Similar to conventional sulfuric acid alkylation, the CDAlky process reacts light olefin streams with iso-pariffins to produce motor fuel alkylate. The advantage of the CDAlky process is its use of a novel contactor/reactor design that significantly increases mass transfer without the use of high horsepower mixers. This approach yields significant benefits including:

  • Lower capital costs
    • The CDAlky process's simple design means a smaller footprint and does not require effluent fresh acid or caustic water wash equipment. This reduces the overall capital requirements compared to conventional sulfuric acid alkylation processes.
  • 30-50% reduced acid consumption
    • The unique CDAlky process contactor/reactor design significantly reduces acid consumption. This lowers fresh sulfuric acid requirements and regeneration costs.
  • Lower operating costs
    • The CDAlky process uses a non-mechanical reaction system which reduces power consumption, rotating equipment maintenance and drive seal maintenance expenses
    • A dry effluent section reduces downstream corrosion
  • Higher quality gasoline blend stock
    • The novel approach of the CDAlky process yields a higher finished alkylate octane of typically 1.0 (R+M)/2
    • Residual sulfur is low at typically 1 ppm

The CDAlky process is effective for both grassroots projects as well as expansion of existing conventional sulfuric acid units and is available for license to the petroleum refining and petrochemical industries.
